From the rocky coasts of Ogunquit and Gloucester, the dunes of Nantucket, and the wide pink beaches of Bermuda, Sandy Tarr has spent hours studying the changing colors and moods of the sea. From Newport’s Cliff Walk high over the ocean, the movement and mystery where water meets sky providing her the subject to challenge time after time. It may be a beach with figures and morning sun, or boats in harbor at dusk…the colors, moving from persimmon sky to aubergine water, creating the time, the mood, and the essence of the work. These paintings are filled with both bold yet gentle strength and poetic delicate subtlety. They are at once powerfully contemporary in their simplicity and equally mysterious and romantic in the complexity of their many layers…hinting at another time and another place. |

| To give life to inanimate objects, to add vitality to simple compositions, to bring movement to that which is still, are the challenges Sandy Tarr confronts when interpreting still life in her paintings. Creating space by using coloreach value and tone as they relate one to another; the viewers eye moving from layer to layer enjoying the richness of the play of texture against texture and the subtle flow of the light which dances throughout the work. Keeping the work lively, alive, and unpredictable is the aim. |
